1/24/11 Update

Hey all!

I just wanted to take a moment out of my day to post a little something about what I have been up to lately and about the next few ideas that I have for posts on the site.

My priest is in such a place where I don’t need to spend too much online, aside from when I’m actually raiding, which means I can spend more time being more diligent about posting here and also being more dedicated to my posts that I contribute for World of Matticus.  Hopefully you are checking out my work there and even if you’re not, still pay Matticus a visit.  He works extremely hard at providing a great resource for all healers and there is bound to be something there for everyone.

I appreciate everyone’s patience and I have a few ideas that I’m kicking around right now.  I’m toying with the idea of doing holy priest specific raid strategies and guides on how to heal certain fights, with a focus on certain spells and rotations you can use.  I would like to continue my L2Holy series and write about glyphs, stat values and things of that nature.  The list goes on and on.

As always, if you would like to see something discussed that we are not covering here, please let us know.  We have a Formspring account, all of us are on Twitter and very active and vocal there and sometimes we can just use the inspiration.  Not all of us have something worth writing about all the time and getting feedback from our readers could really dispel the writer’s block.

So in closing, look forward to more posts from me soon and thank you for hopefully sticking with me through the craziness that is the start of a new expansion.

  1. Hey Oestrus!

I think a great topic would be about all the QQ going on the forums about Chakra. I have to admit that I’m not entirely happy with the mechanic and I recently posted my own rant about it.

My main problem with Chakra is the cooldown. If I make a mistake and cast the wrong spell that puts me in the wrong state, it can be very costly, especially if I’m supposed to be healing the tank. I know that Blizzard is changing a few things on the PTR, but I don’t think its enough. The mere fact that Holy priests excel in one state but are gimped in another isn’t exactly my idea of a good mechanic.

    What I’d like to see:

Chakra made into a Stance or to not have a cooldown (or a very small one). This solves the fear of casting into the wrong state.

All bonuses that both states provide should be baseline for Holy priests. Druids, Shamans, and Paladins aren’t “gimped” and have all abilities and bonuses available to them 100% of the time.

Make Chakra dictate Holy Word spells only. Keep the same mechanic, but lose the bonuses and make them baseline.

I’d love to hear your thoughts about it.

Hey there, Lunar. I’m really sorry about the delay, but I did want to take some time out of my day to respond to your comment.

I have to say that I can’t relate to the criticisms that most people have about Chakra. The only real issues I have with it are more technical, in that there are times it still doesn’t activate, period. I cast Chakra and a corresponding spell immediately after it and I never enter that Chakra state. Talk about being caught with your pants down!

Regarding your thoughts on the mistaken stance and cooldowns, you can still do everything you would normally do, just at a lesser efficiency. But that doesn’t mean you cannot do them. Trust me, I have made the mistake of going into Sanctuary when I wanted Serenity and I could still keep my tank up. I may have had to put more mana into it, but it could be done. Same with the reverse situation. I could use still use PoH and CoH and other tools to keep my groups up. I can’t say that waiting for that cooldown to be back up again affected me that much.

It’s funny, because I cannot say that I have ever felt gimped as a holy priest. There has never been a situation that I have run into so far in this expansion that I have ever felt ill equipped or ill prepared to deal with as a holy priest. Not one.

You do bring some great suggestions to the table, but I can’t say that I want the same things as you do. I have been a fervent supporter of Chakra since it came out and I have to say that I worry about it being too simplified. I really don’t think that’s the answer.

Thanks for the reply Oestrus! I can understand where you are coming from.

My guild is currently working on Valiona and Theralion 10-man and we are running into some difficulty. Right now on LIVE, I do feel like a PoH bot for most fights (especially Valiona/Theralion), so most of the time, I’m in the Sanctuary state. Our resto druid can’t pump out the numbers that I can when I’m able to spam PoH/CoH/PoM and let my wonderful Echo of Light talent do much of the work (I stack mastery). We do run with a disc priest that is our tank healer and does a great job. However in emergency situations (like when the tank healer goes down or is stuck in the Twilight realm), I feel that while in the Sanctuary state I am having an extremely hard time keeping the tanks up. I could always switch to my other Chakra state, but I lose out on the extra 15% (which is quite alot) and the shorter CoH cooldown in an AoE intensive fight which puts more pressure on both of us. I can spam my largest heals, but that extra 10% crit and the Renew refresh is a godsend for tank healing. I can tell you there are many times I wish I had Serenity AND Sanctuary at the same time, but I guess we can’t have our bread and eat it too! LoL.

For our guild, I’m hoping with the buffs to resto druid AoE healing that it might take the strain off of me to get us through the encounter. Burst healing is an absolute must for the Theralion phase because HoTs don’t have much time to tick inbetween those void zone things and the “You’re gonna die if you don’t group up” purple missle thingie. BTW I HATE ENGULFING MAGIC!!
